Post by Solarman on May 15th, 2006, 1:59pm
What about this Howe Gelb plus Gospel Choir tonight, then - any advance on my ignorance?

After that, it's a pretty ordinary looking week - Ian McMillan (quality), Sally Lindsay (frothy but amusing), Sid Griffin (beard-stroking)...

Sally Lindsay - frothy certainly but after about half an hour rather irritating (IMHO!)

Even Mark doesn't know!

<edit> Is this another pre-record?  Do you think Mark and the team listen to the recorded programmes when they go out, or would that be a bit weird?

<edit2> I take that back - it's not a pre-record as Mark has just done the aural equivalent of holding up today's newspaper!

She really annoyed me last night when she appeared not to know who Squeeze are :

"Mark, I'm only 32!"

Well I'm 'only' 33 but I've been aware of Squeeze since I was 6.

Maybe Mark should have pointed out that Jools Holland was once a member. She'll have heard of him cos he's on the telly!

I'm going to stick up for Sally and say that I enjoyed that show,
Why should she have to have heard of Squeeze?,  There are hardly any women on the show and I like her.   I especially enjoyed her saying that Joan as Policewoman is another breathy woman in a long and ever expanding list of breathy women.
If they looked like the back end of a bus would they be on, i'm sure it plays a part, if I was gay and found them attractive I might see more but to me they are just OK.
Not something I would go out of my way to listen to.

Title: Re: Week beginning 15May06
Post by Neil_B on May 19th, 2006, 11:24am
No, I'm sure she has heard plenty of Squeeze records, she just wasn't thinking properly. If Mark had said "they did Cool For Cats" I'm sure she'd know who he was on about.

Anyway, surely someone who has had a No.1 hit single should know something about music  :)

Title: Re: Week beginning 15May06
Post by R_J on May 19th, 2006, 11:25am
She's only having a laugh, what about that awful song Sid Griffin played last night, I didn't know it was Jazz fm.

edit...
I hadn't read Neils post when I typed the top bit, i'm sure she would know some squeeze songs.

I think it's wrong to pick on sally, my music knowledge isn't that great and I think she is a welcome breather to all the blokes  such as Mark Ellen and Noddy.

Yeah, she's alright, but I just wish Mark wouldn't try and discuss music with her because she just uses the "I'm only 32" excuse every time and it annoys me! It's quite amusing when she winds Mark up about not watching Corrie though  :)

Mark Ellen should pay more attention to what Mark says, In Word (I read about it on talkawhile.co.uk, frequented by Pixie and Doc) and then stood in a shop to see for myself, The family Mahone is fronted by Banjo playing lead singer Christy Mahone. You would think the 'DJ' bit would be a clue, perhaps he is only the editor of the bits he writes.

On the Radio 2 board there is much dislike of Katie (i'd agree with that, was she better in 96?) Claudia and Sally.
Do you think the show should have no women on it at all apart from Breathy songstresses to fawn over? Will anyone admit to liking Joan as Police woman and that jenny lewis bird because they are fit?
I think he should get Annie Nightingale on for a grime special.

Breathy songstresses - was that what Sally Lindsay said Mark always goes for?

Stretch limos are a good idea done wrong. They carry lots of people to evening functions in town centres - a useful thing. All they need is a bit more organisation. Perhaps they could make their journeys at regular intervals, which could be displayed at pick-up points along the road - and they could have a bit more headroom, allowing people to stand up as they walk to their seat, rather than climb over other people. Then there should be a sign on the front indicating the destination, and of course they should not only take people into towns, but home again at the end of the night. If enough people used them, the charge could be reduced and standardised for the journey being made. They could be colour-coded for easy identification, and in fact they could be used in the day too for commuters and so on, -----

I wish we could tempt you back to the R2 board to debate some of these points RJ. We could do with your support on our single thread.

For what itís worth, although I understand why Nod, Sally, Winkleman and Ellen etc etc get up the noses of some, none of them really bother me that much. Yes they all irritate to some degree but they also bring some variety to the show. I donít even actively dislike Katie Puckrik; itís just the show doesnít work.

And despite sounding like an overgrown school boy with a crush at times, I should say that I donít find Jenny Lewis that attractive in the conventional lusting sense. Her musical genius got into my head and my heart; nothing really got into my loins. Although, you knowÖif she asked meÖ

Interesting article in today's Guardian Review (http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1777815,00.html)about Grandaddy... apparently, Howe Gelb got them their album deal!

"What saved Grandaddy was Howe Gelb, the cult Americana guitarist. After seeing Gelb's band Giant Sand play in San Francisco, Lytle - drunk, unshaven, unwashed - stumbled up to Gelb to declare his admiration and thrust a Grandaddy tape into his hand. Gelb was instantly smitten"

Perhaps they covered that on Monday while I was only half-lystening.

Are you describing a bus? yes you are.

I think I don't like the people in them rather than not liking the car.

The one I saw had its back windows open, I think that must be to let the smell of Lynx out.

Are you saying stretch limos are for chavs?

I always larff when I see limos trying to negotiate stupid mini-roundabouts on housing estates, put in by the council to confuse people at what used to be T-junctions, and they're always blocked with parked cars anyway.

Perhaps they should have an articulated joint midway, with concertina rubber sheets to cover the gap, and then they'd get round far more easilier. They'd need a third set of wheels and ---- oh, there I go again.

They are not all chavs, you get some right stuck up people in them too.

Who knows if it's spelled wrong on the radio? Mr Armitage could be dyslexic, for all we know.

Unfortunately for Mark, if you're a bumbler, then print is safer than live radio.

Why do I have to talk about UFOs? I want to talk about a very visual nature programme and something on Five at 1am.

To appear on the show I have noticed that you have to develop an extra loud or strange laugh, Sally Lindsay, Mark Ellen, Noddy, Sid Griffin and Eliza Carthy have all achieved this.

I think mine will be along the lines of Sybil Fawlty,
HA HA HA HA HA EEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHH!!!!

I found this but it doesn't have the EEEEEEEEHHHHH!
at the end.

A Scandiwegian accent seems to help as well.

I don't know much about UFOs.  My Dad did once try to convince me that an airship (is that what you call them?) was a UFO, and I believed him for a while...

I've been away. Can someone tell me everything I've missed? I did hear Sally when I was in transit. I bet all the bus passengers were wondering why I kept laughing.
