As posted on the Word Magazine blog:

"My night with Thea Gilmore
Posted by Vince Black on 4 December 2009 - 1:47pm.
On Tuesday just gone I went with my regular gig buddy to see Thea's Christmas tour at Manchester's Band on the Wall. I've seen her a few times as my mate and his wife are long time Thea fans, but I've never been completely bowled over by her and I wasn't expecting too much from this performance

Here's the thing: it was terrific! Rod Clements (original bassist with Lindisfarne) did a nice opening set, and also played acoustic bass guitar for Thea's closing numbers. Thea had a 3 piece band, her husband and right hand man Nigel Stonier on acoustiv gtr, Fluff on fiddle & ac gtr and a young lad playing a hand drum kit

She started solo with a wistful little song by Yoko Ono which was lovely. Then some new and old material with the band. Highlight for me was when she sang without her gtr, backed only by Nigel and sang a drop dead gorgeous version of "Blue Christmas" by Elvis, performed in pin-drop silence. Best performance of the night, and not on her current album

She introduced the 11-piece Sense of Sound choir from Liverpool who appear on the album. They sang with her then performed 2 impressive acapella numbers on their own, including a fine version of Justin Timberlake's "Cry me a River"

My mate Steve told me the album includes an Elvis Costello song called St Stephen's Day Murders, recorded as a duet with Mark Radcliffe. I pointed out at Mr Radcliffe could get there in time to sing it as he finishes broadcasting at 10pm, about 5 minutes away by car. Sure enough at about 10.15 he appeared and performed this as the closing song with considerable aplomb. Even better they came back on and performed a spot-on version of Fairy Tale of New York

I don't think many punters on the current tour will have got to enjoy all this. I'm very glad I went"

So thats why she's on the last show before Christmas!

Ian

This was announced at the same time as Broosh Dickinson leaving... i.e. weeks ago... yes and Mark did say something heavily ironic at the time, along the lines of "your 4-nights-a-week radio pals"

The "Hello Mumford" - "Hello son" thing makes me laugh.

I may have been critical in the past but I do like these two in the afternoon. They're all we've got.

It was interesting to hear Marc Riley sidestep a lishener swipe at Mumford and Sons last night.

Marc launched Mumford and Sons, but he's no longer responsible for their records. At the beginning, their pre-album singles were okay, but I couldn't stand the album, it was very depressing. I think Marc lost interest then too.
