Snows all going now.

Telford was gridlocked at this time last night & a gritter toppled over, apparantly, loads of cars abandoned & sliding all over the place & its a whiteout.
Last time we had snow this bad was in 1994 & no-one seemed remotely prepared for it & got caught out.

Me & Leonard the Mondeo  made it home without any dramas last night only to have to go out shopping again........no beer in the fridge see.
It took two hours to go 8 miles including a 20 minute run around the supermarket.

I was supposed to go to the Forest of Dean to watch the first car rally of the season today  thought better of it as Gloucesterestershire had it worse than us apparantly.....NO NEED. I love my annual trek down to Glouceter & doing some walking in one of the most beautiful forests in the UK & watching rally cars blast though them.

Suppose I'll just have to drink copious amounts of beer now to compensate.

Anyone seen Allely's low-loaders out on the highways? Allely's are a haulage company based in our village. They specialise in moving railway rolling stock by road (since the privatisation, it's often cheaper than by rail - bonkers). Anyway, last night TWO of their low-loaders came to grief on a smallish roundabout in Redditch. The left-turn is too tight, so they go right round and approach the exit head-on; but it's also quite steep; both lorries ended up stuck, one across the roundabout, the other across the approach road.

What were they carrying? British Rail snowploughs.

I have a similar story, not witnessed with my own eyes, but one of my delivery drivers told me about it...

Amidst all the snow and ice, a 40 ft lorry was stranded on a gradient, everytime it tried to pull forward, it slid a little further back.  A gritter was sent to try and clear the path for it...  But approached to fast and slid into it!  Grin

In Holland, they've solved this sort of problem by not having hills. In properly cold countries, they just fit their snow chains and Carry On.

"What's that, Gritter? You want to go out? Excuse me while I let Gritter out."
(Kevin Greening show, c. 1995. It may have been Gripper.)
