Hi.

I wasn't that impressed.  I like a bit of a Radio 4 piss take, but a whole programme is a bit much.  I'd heard some of those mash ups before and that Sawyer woman always annoys me.

That's the thrust of the argument on the R1111 boards - "DTL is better" - can't stand it myself - someone called it lame, and I agree. Phone-in radio is dire (see Any Answers?, Jeremy Vine) and therefore easy, but not necessary, to parody.

The first series wasn't publicised as a comedy to the listeners & apparantly there were mumblings of outrage & the programme was then aouted as a comedy & subsequent series have the words "comedy phone in" prior to each episode so that there can be no illusion as to what it is.

I've listened to the latest series, albeit repeats, it is still as good second time around.

I think my problem is Jon Holmes but I'll give it another go.

Yes I do agree phone-ins are probably beyond parody but done well, as I think DTL is it seems to work.

Satire is in the same boat, only The Onion and Private Eye (sometimes!) make it work.

In this week's episode...

  • Radio 1's JK & Joel, local DJs who somehow made it onto national radio, are dumped for having to ask what year it is, and are replaced on the early show by 2-year-old William, who is generally up at 3am anyway as he's filled his nappy;
  • Alice Arnold is required by the BBC's Indian call centre to supply her security details and reveals that she lives at Frostrup's Hollow;
  • Is Gardener's Question Time racist? Andrew Collins' views;
  • and many more

Cambridge folk festival is on BBC four tomorrow (2nd Nov) at 8.30pm, and for the next four weeks.

2 shows of an hour were better.

After watching all four shows I think they were poorer for being split up into half hour shows, I looked at the cambridge folk festival site and in the first couple of years that they were on BBC Four the programmes were 90 minutes long. It was like they were trying to bury them in the schedule so that the people who went or who were interested wouldn't see them. Someone said on another forum that BBC Four has so many repeats on it that it was strange why it was put on so many months after the festival.

I've just realised what DTL is/was (yes, I know, I'm slow) - it was truly awful; I hated it; Mr Daisy isn't standing over me with a chainsaw because he hates any and everything associated with Mary Whitehouse.
Actually I didn't like it and Listen Against is much, much funnier - course that's only my opinion and if anyone thinks the opposite way then that's fine! Free speech and all that and no personal digs  Grin

*oops was that a dig about anybody? Sorry Erotic*
