Radcliffe & Maconie ...not half bad!!!
« on: Nov 9th, 2007, 7:30pm »

Evening all,

I downloaded and listened again to the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss show and enjoyed it from beginning to end (well, I could have done without "This Just In").  Are they starting to really gel as a team or was it just an extraordinary conjunction of stars, planets, entertaining guests, lively callers and decent music?

I've noticed it too. They are getting better and better. Records may not be the centre point of the show and they do spin the mandatory playlist clanger but they are really doing well. They're pinging things off each other and they're prepared to lose their dignity for a laugh.

They're beginning to play with the medium of radio and mock the standard format. Ken Bruce always makes a good butt of a joke! Jezza Vine and Steve Wright came in for some attention too recently. Radcliffe & Maconie are gradually aligning themselves with the kingpin of Radio Double One, Mark Lamarr.

As a raltive but gobby newcomer I would miss it like hell if it disappeared!

Well, Stuart is.
This is a surprise! It still makes me wince when I catch it occasionally.

There are a few good bits, but just a few.

Most of the funny bits come from Mark - The steve Wright and Jezza bits, the Ken Bruce bits - Stuart then tries to add to them and then it becomes uncomfortable and false as I don't think it comes naturally to him. I'd be crap at it too and I wouldn't know what to say to keep up with Mark, but I can hear when it doesn't work.

I don't know what they are trying to do and that is after listening to all the shows.

I suppose I've heard about 1 in 4 overall... hardly a commitment! Enough trouble finding time to keep up with the brilliant Brain Surgery at the moment.

Stuart seems more comfortable as the weeks pass, Mark lets his nasty side show a little to much for my liking.

Yet when they gel the show is great so if Stuart carries on improving and Mark controls his 'dark' side I can see a great future.

Without wishing to sound too much like another rodent based poster, I don't think Mark has a 'dark' side. I think he has a very dry sense of humour and it is perhaps this that leads him to be perceived as cruel or unkind.

Still, without ever having met the man, just listened to years and years of radio output I don't believe he has a cruel bone in his body - although in the case of Celine Dion some exception might be made  Wink

You and Ian seem to write more about the other people on the board.

I agree, why would you want to sound like me and actually  like Mark and stick up for him.

I don't know how people can say that one is constantly denigrating the other or one is ill-informed and the other is knowledgeable. They have it all worked out, it's all scripted. That's why it works so well, they're each happy to play their role in this rapidly improved partnership.

I thought I WAS talking about Mark - and its very well documented here and elsewhere that I am a long-standing Radcliffe fan.

As for sounding like you R_J - it leaves me with at least one unfulfilled ambition before I shuffle off this mortal forum - sorry coil.

Ditto. I was on a roll then it all went pear-shaped.
