I didn't know Holland's Pies were a local delicacy.  Grin

What on earth is a 'parched pea'?

I was at a party in Preston (how many stories start like that?), and the subject of parched peas came up.

All Prestonians present: Oh yeah, love 'em.

Non-Prestonians: What?!  In a cup?

From what I can tell, eaten like take-away chips, and almost as popular.

To get back on thread...

I lishened again to Maconly.  It's not bad, is it?  I'd listen if there wasn't anything else on.

To quote a certain someone from another thread:

Thay really have arsed a damn fine presenter up these days.

Reduced to depping for Steve Sh*te & his miserable playlist & Z-list guests & presenting a evening show so hackneyed & messed about with.

I only listen now when there is someone vaguely interesting on the show [Winkleman is a no go area then].

For goodness sakes Double one put the man on some more great audio documentaries & a regular show that it is vital to listen to.

etc

I have to say I wholeheartedly agree. But how about the rest of us?

Mark being on his own this week has reminded me just how much I enjoyed the Mark Radcliffe Show.

The continuing Radcliffe or Maconie? saga does neither the presenters or the show itself any good. From my perspective it actively damages it because without Stuart it becomes the Mark Radcliffe Show again.

Yet if this great idea cooked up in a pub that Lesley Douglas thought was so great, why let them separate so often? Indeed, why let them broadcast the show alone? Better surely to have insisted on both presenters or neither and have got a proper stand in for when either Stuart or Mark are on holiday.(Although not Mark Lamarr 'cos he puts both of them in the shade.)

dont get alarmed but i had a serious thought regarding this thread -
would we expect quite so much of mark still if we had not lost peel?
maybe we feel he should and is arguably best qualified to take on the mantle of elder statesman who keeps the beeb's radio output interesting and varied and knowledgable, etc, well as much as anyone could...
just a thought!

I look on Marc as the new Peel.

One of his beds would segue perfectly into Peel's theme tune. Can't remember which one.

that was actually my second thought - that marc has actually moved into this role much more...who'da thunk it when he was always the hapless sidekick!

In 10 years, Marc will command far more respect than Mark in the music industry. Mark's a radio man. Marc's a plugger who stumbled into radio.

Marc has a big advantage though - his show is meant to champion new and varied music (which it does) on a station that was set up to champion new and varied music (which it seems to be drifting away from to a certain extent).

The Mark Radcliffe Show and now Mark and Maconie are more general shows. They manage to get varied music in, particularly with the live sessions. But there is also less pimping of new (non-playlist) music, and less live sessions per week. It is diverse in other ways though, with it's interviews, regular guests and the like.

All true, Erotic, nothing wrong with that. The point was that with that show, Mark is not the new Peel.

I know. I was just saying Marc has the advantage of working at a station that lets him play just about anything, whether it's good or not.

I've no idea whether either Mark or Marc would honestly want to assume John Peel's legacy. Marc shies away the idea when people make that comparison, and Mark doesn't have to...
